Uncle Jetlag ("we", "us", "our") is the travel information website unclejetlag.com, published by Willard Munyaradzi Kachere under the name Uncle Jetlag. He is responsible for the personal information collected through this site.

What we collect

We don't ask for passport numbers, payment details or other sensitive information, and we ask that you don't send them to us.

Advertising (Google AdSense)

We use Google AdSense to show ads that pay for this site's free content.

• Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites.
• Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to our users based on their visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.

Legal bases for processing

If you're in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or another place with similar laws, we rely on:

• Consent: for the newsletter and non-essential (analytics and advertising) cookies. You can withdraw consent at any time.
• Legitimate interests: for running and securing the site, and replying to messages you send us.
• Legal obligation: where the law requires us to keep or disclose information.

If you're in South Africa, we process personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) conditions for lawful processing. That includes processing only for a specific purpose, using only what we need, and keeping it secure.

Who we share information with

We share personal information only with service providers who help us run the site:

• Vercel: website hosting and server logs
• Google: advertising (AdSense) and, if enabled, analytics
• Brevo (based in France): to store newsletter subscribers and send the newsletter you've asked for. If you sign up, Brevo sends a confirmation email first, and every newsletter has an unsubscribe link.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights, our users or the public. We do not sell your personal information, and we don't share it for cross-context behavioural advertising except through Google advertising cookies you've consented to where consent is required.

International transfers

Our service providers may process data outside your country, including in the United States and the European Union. Where the law requires it, these transfers rely on appropriate safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses or adequacy decisions.

How long we keep it

• Newsletter data: until you unsubscribe (questions: jetlagged@unclejetlag.com (opens in a new tab)). We keep a minimal suppression record so we don't email you again.
• Emails you send us: for as long as needed to handle your request, and then for up to 24 months.
• Consent choices: stored in a cookie on your device (uj_consent) for up to 6 months, after which we ask again.
• Server logs: according to our hosting provider's retention periods.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

• access the personal information we hold about you
• correct it
• delete it
• restrict or object to how we use it
• ask for a copy in a portable format
• withdraw consent at any time
• complain to your data protection authority, such as the UK ICO, your EU supervisory authority, or South Africa's Information Regulator

If you're a California resident, you have the right to know, delete and correct personal information, and to opt out of its "sale" or "sharing". We don't sell personal information. You can opt out of advertising cookies at any time through Cookie settings.

Security

We use HTTPS across the site, limit who can access personal information, and use reputable providers. No system is completely secure, so please don't send sensitive documents by email.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 16. We don't knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.

Changes to this policy

We'll update this page when our practices change and show the new date at the top. For significant changes, we'll add a notice on the site.
